Fabric Opinions -Anyone purchased from SyFabrics or Joann's?

Post by Madighon »

Hello, I'm looking for opinions on fabric.

Outer Robes:
Syfabrics - They have three types of Velvet, 100% Cotton Med/Light Weight Velvet (55-57 inches wide), 100% Cotton Med Weight Velvet (56-58 inches wide) and Plush Triple Velvet (44-45 inches wide). Would any/all of these be approvable? Which of these is the best, which color is best, etc.

Joann's, Hancock, Hobby Lobby - has anyone used velvet from any of these stores?

Inner Robes:
I'd like to find a cotton Gabardine, but it seems impossible. Does anyone know where to find this?
Joann's have 50% off Bottomweight fabrics right now, they have a polyester Gabardine in red that could be dyed darker to get a burgendy color. Would ployester gabardine be acceptable and would it breath any better than a second/third layer of velvet?

Thanks,
Madighon

Joann's have Velvet 40% off through Nov 15th. Any opinions on their velvet compared to other fabrics as I asked in my earlier post would be fantastic.

Thanks,

I'm based out of Canada and have not used any of these fabrics... Maybe some of our US members can chime in??

I've ordered swatches from SyFabrics and DistinctiveFabrics for Velvet and Online Fabric Store for Burgundy gabardine and Poly Cotton Twill Fabrics. I'm going to take these to Joann's and see how they match up to the Velvet there and also Bottomweight Wrincklease cotton fabric.

If anyone has any experience with any of these fabrics please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Madighon

It's not the best way to get feedback on fabric, however posting your swatches up in natural light when they arrive may help? Someone might be able to look over them even without having had experience with the fabric from those companies.

My build is made of DistinctiveFabric's velveteen. Machine-washable and the color is awesome. The one beef I have with it is that it is kinda stiff, and doesn't drape as well as velvet would.

Just purchased my velvet from Joann's with a 60% off coupon:)

Here is a picture with my helmet and boots. Helmet will get painted to match the outer robes. I've also got a swatch of burgundy gabardine in the picture. I'm going to order the burgundy gabardine from OnlineFabricStore for liner and inner robes.

Let me know your opinions.

The burgundy should ideally be a darker colour. There is very little colour difference between the two fabrics pictured.

It is actually quite a bit different, not sure why the picture shows it so close. I'll have to try taking pictures in different light.
