Outer Robe

Post by DarthMel »

So, I'm really wanting to start on my robes and have a pattern that I think I can use for the inner robe. The problem is the outer robe. I can't find a pattern that I think might work. I barely know how to sew as it is and I am learning all this as I go. I know I will need to make my robes out of cheap fabric to start with, but it still doesn't change the fact that I'll eventually have to work with velvet directly. It makes me very nervous.

So, does anyone have any pointers on how to proceed with the outer robes and maybe recommend a pattern for a n00b sewer to use?

Also, are the red and dark burgundy still the colors to use from here: http://www.distinctivefabric.com/fabric ... ct=VELVET1

It should be the red and the burgundy, not the dark burgundy if
I recall properly...

Good plan on using some cheap fabric to do a test run, one pointer though... Try to keep the fabric similar in weight to the velvet or velveteen you will eventually use. I personally recommend velveteen for the simple reason that it can get wet if it starts to rain, and it can be washed in your regular laundry machines instead of having to get it dry cleaned all the time.

As for a pattern, there isn't really any one pattern that everyone uses. When I am on my computer next ( instead of my iPad) I'll link you to the pattern that my GF and I used to make my cloak.

Thanks for the tips! If you can link to that pattern, I will be forever grateful.

Just be careful with that velvet. I sat down at a convention in a plastic chair and it was a tad hot. The fabric melted to the back of the plastic chair with my body heat and it ruined my robes. Complete ride off!

I've heard of velvet getting crushed, but never melted...

Maybe it was an electric chair...in that case melted velvet wouldn't be all that bad.

If you iron velvet it can leave an imprint. I don't think the fabrics melted only the "furry" fibers on top. Or it was made of an high percentage of synthetics. But if so, you usually don't sit on very hot surfaces^^

Hey there,

Great forum - a wealth of info. I have been researching and am about to purchase fabric from Sy Fabrics (as per a post I had seen from command staff) and I just want to confirm: burgundy or dark burgundy? On the post I saw (from Ang) it said Dark Burgundy, however it would appear that you (Stripes) are more active these days than she is and that CRLs are constantly being updated (her post is several years old). Would you be kind enough to put the matter to rest one final time (and then I think I can buy my fabric in peace :trsuit: ).
Thanks in advance - and looking forward to becoming one of you.

I'll take another look at it, but I believe my previous statement still stands.

Thanks so much. I took a look online at the Sy Fabrics site and the burgundy and dark burgundy looked practically the same (although I am sure I am missing something - the internet is tricky for fabric purchases - but at $7 per yard VS. $75 per yard at my local textiles outlet - I'd say it is worth it). I decided to go with the dark burgundy. I have read the various threads on this forum and you seem to be on the money with all of your advice - thanks for being there for us "future :tr: " makes investing in velvet much easier.
