Seeing as how Velour is not accurate nor acceptable for 501st membership... the point is moot.

Of course... if you do want to wear velour I hear Zap Brannigan is always looking for recruits.....

so after all discussions with members of the German Garrison i decide to chose the cloth ones (velour / Deutsch: Seide).

I think i am on safe side at this point...well, wait for the package :trsuit:

Since you've said that in a couple of threads I just posted in... Ignoring the snark, when I say 'velour' I mean the 21-ounce (pretty darn heavy) cotton velour theater curtain material the original ROTJ capes were made from, not synthetic, lightweight, and/or panne velour that a lot of people think of when they see or hear the word. I am not talking about shiny, wrinkly first-season Star Trek uniform fabric. It may not be acceptable, but it is accurate. Nilo Rodis said so, and the fabric characteristics are an exact match. The only point I'm not clear on is whether they were actual salvaged theater curtains, or just made from new fabric sourced from a theatrical drapery mill specifically for the production.

*sigh* I've been sewing for almost thirty years now, and my mother and grandmother before me. I've absorbed a lot from them, taken a lot of classes over the years, and done a lot of independent research. I'm not a noob -- I actually do know what I'm talking about, and try not to sling baseless speculation around the internet -- except in threads that are specifically for and about baseless speculation. *heh* I also do my best to make sure of my facts before stating them publicly. I don't like looking foolish.

I'll try to find which of Nilo Rodis' very rare interviews saw him actually talking about more than just the general design process for the Emperor's guards, but he was the one who said they used 'theater curtains' as fabric for their robes, and there's a very narrow range of fabrics that have been used for that over the last century and change. Consulting with as many of the very few makers of such that exist in the world today, the consensus -- based on things like weight, movement, drape, reflectivity, texture, and so forth -- is a non-fire-retardant heavy-weight cotton velour in the 18-to-24-ounce range. They ruled out velvet right off as too shiny. Like the brushed linen used for Jango's flight suit, velvet's fibers are distressed to give it particular light-reflecting/scattering properties that are not seen on the Guards.

And, now that I'vethoroughly derailed this thread from the gloves that were being discussed... :|

Again, as per the CRL's, velour IS NOT acceptable for 501st approval. I have seen the screen used robes and can assure you they are not velour, they are velvet.

You aren't the only person who has put in a great deal of research time, and quite frankly, spreading mis-information about the various components when you yourself don't have an approved costume for this official 501st detachment, is extremely inappropriate.

If you would like to discuss alternate options for any costume components, please send them to the command staff for review and consideration on accuracy.

On the flip side, you're not the only one who's seen the original in the LFL Archives. The particular fabric I keep mentioning matches that cape exactly. *shrug* Maybe if I'd actually been able to get that swatch to you, you'd've thought it was velvet, despite what the manufacturer said. I dunno. I just know that it is not like the typical cheap velours one finds at Jo-Ann or online. It is very tightly woven, has a nice deep pile and smooth nap, and is very much like the better velvets I've seen minus velvet's luster. I still have it sitting right here, as I'd originally intended to mail pieces of it to you and Stephen so you could evaluate it for yourselves and not just take my appraisal. I'm still up for that.

I admit I've only been researching the Guard costume for a bit over eleven years, despite being in love with them ever since they first appeared in the ROTJ promo material in '82. I've tried to get back to first sources wherever I can. Heck, that's how and why I have a cape pattern mastered off the cape in the Archives. I wanted as accurate as possible. If I am wrong, then it is a result of sources in and near LFL -- in the '80s and over the past decade -- being 'in error where the facts are concerned' when it comes to what I've read in interviews, been told by staffers and other researchers, or seen with my own eyes.

I am stubborn and will hang in when I know I'm right about something (see my unpopularity over the Magma Trooper and Storm Commando definition issues *heh*), and the 501st has gotten things wrong before (see those, and the refusal to accept pale metallic gray as the accurate color for Republic Commandos), but I am now in doubt. Not enough to abandon my plans (I'll work with what I've got and post pictures so y'all can judge... if it looks wrong, I'll try again -- after eleven years what's a bit longer?), but enough I'll shut up about it until a fresh Archive Delve. ;)

I'll go back to quietly working on my TFU stuff again now...

I'm not the one who edited this particular post. Perhaps you could ask LT or Jester...

They are talking about things that have nothing to do with your original question so don't worry about it the cloth gloves are correct.

Nick is correct. The cloth gloves are what are correct. Please disregard the other posts. We are trying to deal with a situation where someone who is not an approved member is passing incorrect information to potential recruits such as yourself.

My appologies for the hijack on your thread.
