My Royal guard build

Post by liriel »

Hello again,

As promised in my introduction thread, here are some pictures of my costume, which I hope meet the CRL requirements. The colors seem to vary a lot with lighting and flash/no-flash, so I added some written description. Sorry about the fuzzy pictures, it's my first attempt at using photo bucket, I was probably supposed to shrink the pictures somehow before uploading them

I appreciate any advice you guys can give me :)

Here are some details, in the same order as the CRL :

Helmet : crimson gloss, fiberglass (bought online, haven't learned how to build those myself yet), visor is red but it didn't really "obscure my features", so I added black car tint film inside (could easily change it for mirror car tint film if you guys think that's better).

Outer robe : red crimson velvet exterior, dark purple velveteen lining, single arm opening with overlapping edges, of course.

Inner robe : burgundy cloth (as the CRL specifically says "cloth", I figured using cotton broadcloth was better than using velveteen).

Sash : almost 4 inches wide, same fabric as the robe, with a 1 inch wide burgundy ribbon in the center (as is in the CRL picture).

Gloves : bought those, they match the lining of the outer robe, I think it would probably be better if they matched the inner robe instead, so I'm planning to make new ones.

Boots : crimson red suede boots, toe is a rounded point, bought and removed all decorative stitching.

Force pike : Not yet, will work on it once I'm sure the rest is acceptable.

Troop ability vs Screen Accurate. I would let the "Broadcloth" slide do to Velvet underrobes one would tend to over heat. My ROTS robes are screen accurate Burgundy Gaberdine. I would replace the 1 inch ribbon with Matching Fabric as the large Sash. That's the only thing I really see that stands out.

I agree, the ribbon definitely needs to be swapped out. Knowing how hard it can be to get good gloves, I'll just say don't stop looking for something that matches your inner robes better.

Sure, I can do that easily enough... but can you clarify which matching fabric? Matching the outer robe, the outer robe lining? (The rest of the sash is currently the same fabric as the inner robe)

As for the gloves, I did stop looking... but only because I've now concluded I have to make some myself if I want to really get what I want ;) . First step will be getting some burgundy velveteen, which my local store doesn't seem to stock at this time of year. I guess they might order it if I asked, I'm getting to be a very good client lately :D

Thanks for the help guys!

The ribbon should be replaced by the same material as the belt itself, so in you case, the same as your inner robe.

Ah, ok, I can do that. Well, actually, just removing the ribbon and doing two lines of overstitch in the middle of the belt would give that result.

Actually, now that I think about it... yes, that's what the other side of the belt looks like. So I can just turn it inside out. (I do intend to eventually add cord as the next level of the CRL says, just haven't found any appropriate cord so far)

OK, modification done! I wish they were always that easy to do :trsuit:
