Build Thread for 3D print Helmet

Hello @all,
i'm Dimitri, 38 years old and from Germany. I try to build my first costume, a ROTJ Guard, and to save money i want to use as much as possible my 3D printer.

My first try was a free model from thingiverse.com but after the half print i noticed, that the helmet was way too small.
So i decided to print it 15% bigger.

Here are the first results with PLA:




I glued the pieces together with ca-glue and friction welded all together for more strength.

Now i have some concerns about the size. I think it is too big for me. I have plenty of room inside the helmet to turn my head:



And the edges of the headband (i don't know the exact name) are strange:





I'm considering whether to look for a new 3D model or to save the print with a lot of putty and sanding?

I'm grateful for any help.

Yeah looks to be a bit on the large side.

I bought a new 3d model and printed some references to find the right size and started with a few parts. It looks way better than the other model:



Unfortunatly my printer don't want to print at the moment. First i had some problems with the heat bed:



then i had trouble with the filament flow:



I don't know why the layers of the print have such holes.
I increased the printing temperature => same result
I cleaned the nozzle => same result
I increased the voltage of the extruder motor a little bit => same result

What i found out is, that the extruder motor jumps some steps back and i hear a crack. Perhaps i have to increase the voltage a lot more.

Never touch the voltage, there is not ever a reason to do so on a 3d printer... and increasing the voltage could cause not enough to be available for your stepper motors which could cause the skipping in and of itself.

The extruder skipping can be due to many issues, but the voltage is definitely not one of them.


What filament are you using and what temperatures and speeds?

Normaly i print with 210 degrees Celsius and the speed is 60mm/s. (Infill 50mm/s and wall 30mm/s)
Due to the issues i increased the temperature to 220 degrees.

The filament i use is PLA from 3dk.berlin

Hrm that should be fine. it could be under extrusion.

Which slicer do you use?

Have you don't the usual, temp towers and calibration cubes? Things like that can help point you in the right direction.

I have printed a temp tower (i don't know why i didn't get this idea before). It looks like i have some problems with the temperature:





I think i will print one more with higher temperatures. Maybe I'll buy a temperature measuring device to see if the temperatures measured at the nozzle are correct.
