Amount of fabric needed??

Post by tech_badger »

So I've been doing some research and While I can find patterns and refererance pics, I have no idea how much fabric I'll actually need. I'm sure it'll be a lot, I just don't know how much. Plus I need to figure out how much money I need to put away to buy said fabric since this stuff ain't cheap. How much fabric, generally, does it take to actually construct the Inner and Outer robes?

As for the amount of fabric you would need would depend on your size. I am a fat ass over 300 lbs, so I need more fabric than someone that is only about 150. So depending on your size amount would differ greatly.

also depends on the length of the fabric some places sell it and 56" or more if you're not that tall you can use it length wise and use alot less than if you have to use it the other direction.

I've planned on about 10 yards of fabric (10 for the outer, 10 for the inner) based on width and my size. I haven't done the real measurements and planning yet but I can't imagine needing more of that so I can price it out in my head assuming it'll be less.

Thanks for imput. I'm about 5'6" 178 lbs if that helps. Buying and sewing large amounts of fabric is quite new to me.

Also, what is the difference between Triple Velvet and Plush Triple Velvet? Would it just be smoother/ softer? More importantly, would it be acceptable?

Well, with out a pattern and measurements there really is no way to say exactly how many yards you would need. I would guess and say about 3 but I could be wrong you may need 4 but i could be wrong

When ordering bulk fabric always order a little more, having to little could easily bring a build to a screeching halt. Although Imperial Guards seem to be the cheaper way of getting into to 501st (no need to buy an armor kit) it takes some researching to do (as I am doing right now). If you can find a twab pattern (maybe something from Halloween!) But you do want to do your research right because if you cut it wrong it's money waste and you'll have to re-order, sewing projects can be touchy so if you have time and like 20-30 bucks extra, go out and buy some really cheap fabric and make a cloak (that you won't use for this) and experiment with sizing with it, you can always re-pin the section if need be but at least you won't be stuck frustrated with a couple hundred dollars of waste fabric! I know that once I figure out everything that I need to do for my cloak and twab I'll be posting a video online once it's approved by the 501st to help other people who want to join but don't have a clue where to start. I posted a hour long video on how to make a Ghille suit for airsoft and it was a lot of work, I assume this will be a tad easier.
