ROTJ Style Royal Guard Work In Progress

Post by Kamikallama »

So I've decided that I want to become a ROTJ style Royal Guard and have already started working on my kit. I bought a bucket and I just got it yesterday.

It looks great. There are some places where the paint needs to be redone so it looks like I am going to need to repaint. I am also going to need to get a better visor. The tint on the one I have isn't good enough.

Before I repaint I want to get my robes right in case I need to paint the helmet to match the robes. I've got some burgundy fabric that I had just lying around that has a good weight to it. But I am not sure if it is the correct type of fabric for the under robe.

I've also looked at different Velvet fabrics that I can use to make the outer robes.

I am leaning towards this one. It looks pretty good, and I already have some of it.

I am running into a difficulty with the inner part of the robe. I live in a small town so it is hard to find burgundy velvet in my area. Is there something acceptable that I can use as a substitute? The CRL says dark purple is also acceptable, but what shade? Does anyone have a good example of a good shade of dark purple that is acceptable?

The fabric store in town has some dark purple velvet. I will see if I can get a pic of it tomorrow to use to compare.

According to the CRL you can use any cloth, so a Gabardine type like the one you have would be ok for the inner robe. Usually you would use the same for the lining of the outer robe, so velvet. Honestly I have seen the purple inner robes and burgundy looks much better.

Not any cloth... it has to be a heavy weight cloth that will hang/drape correctly.

The without seeing the way the fabric hangs it's hard to tell if what you have will work. It is a good colour.

One thing that I am seeing right off with the helmet, the visor will need to be replaced as it is not dark enough to obscure your face. This is a mandatory upgrade to meet the CRL standrads.

I worked on my build quite a bit over the weekend and I am making some decent progress.
I've been working on the outer robe. It still has work to be done to it. The arm slit isn't sown together yet. The bump on my chest is my arm trying to hold it together. I am going to wait until I've sown the burgundy velvet on before I close that section off. It seems like that will make it easier to work with.

How does the helmet look as far as color comparison goes?

You won't want the fabric being that tight... the robes should be large enough to flow freely

Since you're making them yourself (with help of course) I'd do my best to make the front of the robes look like they do in the movie...draped.

Mine are flat and I regret that.

The right side isn't sown together yet. When I measuredo my dimensions I left extra room in case I needed it. I noticed from looking at others WIPs people saying it is easier to shorten than lengthen. So I do have more room to work with.

The drape affect is something I am attempting to do. I like how it looks. I just need to figure out how to do it.

It may be just a slight angle of the camera, but the helmet looks warped to your right, quite significantly, I'd like to have someone else chime in here, in case I'm just crazy!
