BDHW ROTJ Royal Guard Giant bucket build WIP

Post by TangWay »

Greetings and salutations! Be gentle this is my first replica build and my first post on here! Long story short my best friend is joining the 501st as a RG and has purchased her helmet. I, on the other hand, am running myself through the ringer and seeing what I can make and if it can meet the same standards as her fancy schmancy one. I also have an abnormally huge cranium and like to build things custom for me so here goes nothing!

While it is always cool to see someone building something from scratch, I can already see some issues with your build that are not going to work. These are meant as constructive critiques to help you.

The front of the helmet, at the bottom, is stretched disproportionally long.

The visor area is misshapen and will require a significant change/rebuild.

The details of the helmet (raised sections) are not showing up properly.

The overall appearance seems to be stretched long and squished narrow.

Keep in mind, this is the most technical helmet to build from scratch outside of a Vader helmet due to the unique curves and details. I would highly recommend looking at other helmets to see where the curves and details are if you do want to continue with this project.

Barring that, for larger heads, there are options such as the rubies supreme edition helmet and the South American helmets that would work.

Owie. IT BURNS!!!

I hate to admit when I am wrong but I am very very wrong in this case. *sigh* you are correct and I had reference pictures and even got to man handle a bucket for reference. I guess I was so excited and caught up in the process I missed stuff.

The visor can be repaired fairly easily and I noticed that even when I was resining it. The cheeks are also another easy fix and I see your point where the detail is lost.

As for the stretched out and lack of shoulder support issue... I have some ideas on how to fix it because I really hate to scrap this whole thing. I think its salvageable. The worst case is I have to scrap it and start fresh. I REALLY REALLY wanted the one pepakura file someone had of this helmet that was just perfect and wonderful. I just couldn't get ahold of the person who had it, I was even willing to pay! :(

I didn't give up!!! I realize my mistakes before and I am taking a fresh build with my new knowledge! Here is where I am at right now. I got my grubby little fingers on a new file and have really taken my time putting it together, reinforcing it in all the right places, making sure the curves, points, sizes, dimensions and details are right. Just letting it sit for a few days until I can come back to it with fresh eyes (and the missing piece for the back of the helmet!) so I can make any final adjustments before it gets resined.

As always as they might sting suggestions and insights are always welcome! Better now than later right? ;)
*** The visor only picture is BEFORE I put the braces in to make it even and straighten the lines out, why I didn't take an after I have no idea!***

I don't know if this will get seen or I need to make a new post but I have held off on putting resin on my helmet because I need some advice. I think the helmet is too thick. From front to back it just seems very open. I test fit it several times and it looks proportionate to my body, there are no gaps on the shoulders, chest or back. It all sits flat on my body everywhere. My eyes are aligned to the visor perfectly. I just wanted some suggestions on how "thick" it should be. Again... everything looks proportionate on me.

Depending on the helmet (or this case the model file) they will be larger or smaller. Are you able to show a picture with the helmet on without destroying your work?
