Outer Robe

My first dye job was a success!
I'll post a picture as soon as I have one.
Does the outer robe need to be made in 4 pieces (a front, a back, and 2 side pannels)? I'm asking because in order to get the proper drape effect, I need to cut the front and back pannels on the bias. In order to get the front pannel and back pannel each in one piece, the fabric needs to be at least 70 inches wide. I'm having great difficulty finding velvet that wide. Do the front and back pannels have to be in one piece, or am I allowed to add a few extra seams to obtain the proper width and length while maintaining the bias cut?

My robe is AoTC style and has a total of 5 panels (1 front, 2 sides and 2 back)... Of course it also took a lot of fabric (somewhere around 15m since I'm 6'3" out of costume). There is a simplicity pattern for a cloak that can be modified to give a nice drape.... I'll see if my GF can dig it out of her sewing stuff for reference numbers

ROTJ robes are one piece (well I mean you might have to sew multiple parts together but there is only one arm opening).

Thanks.
I actually modeled my pattern on a cloak pattern as well. It's the drape that's giving me problems because the only way I know how to get a good drape is by cutting the pattern on the bias (diagonal) of the fabric. Do you kow of any other ways to get a good drape? Simple pleats don't seem to do the job. Barring that, do you know where I can get crimson velvet that's at least 70 inches wide?
As for the arm slit, no worries--my robe will have only 1 slit on the right side.
I do have a bit of a conundrum with my boots, though. I have a nice pair of crimson suede boots with a pointed toe, however there is a decorative crimson suede band threaded around the top of each boot. Of course, neither band is visible when I wear the tunic, but I know that such bands are not permitted. I can easily cut the bands off, but the metal eyelets through which they pass will still remain along with the holes. Can these boots be salvaged, or should I start looking for a new pair of boots? Also, how high of a heel is considered conservative?
Thank you very much for your help.

Take a picture of the boots and I'll give you my words. One Inch is considered a conservative boot.

Great...just wanted to make sure!

I've yet to find a place online that has it. I keep an eye out just in case I want to stock pile some velvet for a future robe re-do.

Hi Stripes,
My GF is making a Guard and she used a cloack pattern (McCall's #6774) is this pattern close to what your GF used.
And do you think it would be acceptable?
thanks for any pointers

Without seeing pictures it would be hard to say if it would be approvable or not. I can see about finding out the pattern we used for my cloak some time this weekend around the 3 troops I have running and get it posted up as a reference for everyone... keep in mind that it had to be heavily modified to get the right look to it.

She gave the "not quite finished" outfit a test drive this weekend at a Star Wars themed event (she still has to close the left side opening, make a belt and force pike, and somehow make her visor darker...). Here's a picture, surrounded by various rebels :
