I know someone already talked about painting the helmet, but I was looking into how to get it ready for painting too. Also if anyone has a definative answer about the paint that would be great.

I used Krylon cherry red gloss finish.
Clear coating is good, but I have a tendency to hit my helmet with my forcepike and get some minor paint transfer every troop. Also, you want FINE sand paper once you start painting. I sanded mine down starting rough and working up to about 2000 girt. However, there are some 8 - 12,000 grit papers that I've recently acquired. These are for polishing and have given the helmet a nicer sheen than it had previously. Also, I over painted. WAY over painted, which is easy to do. You don't need a full can of primer and 2 cans of red. Granted that way I don't have to worry about hurting the helmet much as its really thickly painted, but just the same, I went a bit overboard.
Hope that helps answer some of your questions.
