Seams on outer robe

Post by Shikkakku »

Hello all,

Quick question- my seamstress and I are trying to figure out how to pattern out the outer robes and I'm wondering if the back panel of the outer robes can be made from 2 pieces with a seam running down the middle. Or does it have to be one seamless piece of velvet.
Thanks in advance!

Should be one seamless piece.

For RoTS, it is a single piece... if this were RoTJ or AoTC you could split the back into two pieces and hide the seam in the folds of the cloak easily enough.

You'll want to be looking for fabric that is 60 or 72 wide, not 48 as this is what you'll need to do this as a single piece

Here's a question that my seamstress brought up, does the lining (of the same material as inner robe) have to be seamless at the back panel as well? Or is there some leeway there as it won't be seen.

We're planning to do the lining first as a mock-up of the outer robe before I go out and purchase the velvet.

Ideally yes as if you have a seam on the inner it will cause issues with how the cloak flows once it is sewn to the outer... the pieces should be mirror images of each other to prevent this from happening.

Noted, thank you Stripes. I appreciate the help.
I'm getting really anxious that I might commit to a plan and realize that it was wrong from the get go. So I translate that anxiety into asking about every single possibility that crosses my mind. :P

Always better to ask 100 questions and make sure you get it right than to find out months from now it's wrong and have to start over.

measure twice and cut once as it were :trsuit:
