hey all i have my helmet and just bought the velvet for the outer robe. pattern is on the way via mail.
the outer velvet is premier red velvet for joanns.
i also got a swatch of a cheaper velvet that is red because they do not have burgandy or wine color there.
i have tried a couple swatches in poly dye and am liking the results so far.
will try to attach pics of what i have so far.
ok so i tried to direct attach a pic file and it did not work.
do i have to use photobucket for this site?
i know i have to for the mercs.

The photos are linked from a thirdparty site. you can add them by using the "[img]picture[/img]" IMG tag

Thanks for opening the WIP.
And yes you need some hosting page for the pictures.

ALright I have the photos uploaded to a third party site.
Also the patterns started coming in yesterday.
I now have the mccalls pattern 2810 and mcccalls 2060.
I am gathering it is the cape from the 2810 that i need to modify .
And the 2060 c pattern.
Will try and get these pics uploaded.
hopefully these fabrics are acceptable.
(especially since the outer velvet was over $100 alone)
Also what is the material that i can use for the inner robe?

So here is the helmet with the outer velvet. The helmet is a one peice constructed of fiberglass.

Second photo is of a couple swathes I have test dyed.
The joanns here does not have a burgaandy or wine colored velvet so i used a ipoly dye on some swathes of red velvet.
Sorry the photo is not that great.
First swatch from the top is the swatch with no dye.
second swatch has been dyes for 5 minutes.
Thrid swatch was dyed for 10-15 minutes.
And third swatch was dyed for around 30 minutes.
I also did one more swatch for a longer period of time. But have no pic of that at this time.
I will get a better pic of all swatches up hopefully by this weekend.

For best results on the swatches do an outside picture because the flash can distort the color.

I will try to get a pic of the swatches in the outside daylight tomorrow. On another note I took out the patterns of the cloak and laid them out on the velvet and it appears I need another 2 yards. That kinda sucks. I will need to know how to do all the mods on the cloak. Seems all the pieces of the pattern need to be doubled and then sewn together. Plus another seem and wherever the arm slit goes.

Red looks good. I would go with the middle one for the lining and underrobes.

I myself am thinking the third one down. The second one down is very similar in color to the outer robe material. Photos of this stuff ( and especially reds) really do not come out well. So I think I have the materials for the cloak figured out. Now reading about the inner robe it states " cloth" . that is pretty vague and velvet is just hella expensive. What are others using?

Alot of folks use coupons at fabric stores to help with the cost of the costume. It's a fun hobby but like any hobby it has its cost with rewards.
