HELP-On ROTJ Pike Tip

Post by IrishFett »

Hey everyone, I am right now trying to decide on which version to do. I would love to do an ROTJ to match my Boba but was looking at the pike tip and just scratched my head. I know the other versions have the rings but I really want to go 100% screen ROTJ. So my question is does anyone know of where I can get the ROTJ pike tip or who makes a kit for an ROTJ or somehting along those lines? Or just in general, how did you guys make yours? Thanks and any info would be a BIG help.
Cheers! :tr2: :forcepike:

The spiky rasp is difficult to make accurately. I don't think anyone knows what the original prop used for this part. My suggestion, whatever method you choose, is don't go over the top. The movie spikes where small and subtle. Try and acheive that look. I've seen some pikes that have huge cut out spikes that stick out an inch from either side of the pike. :o They are pretty over-the-top. Just remember, you are not making a war-club...just some pointy bits. :)

My tips were made from plain old cut ABS I had left from my TK thighs, glued to the undercoated ski pole and sprayed to match. As to how long they stay there remains to be seen but I made spares :trsuit:

Size wise about 6mm wide, 30mm long but has to be proportional to the lenght of your pike I guess ;)

Here's a close-up of mine:

For the spiky bit, I have a bit of thin brass tubing (21/32"ID x 1 5/16"L) that fits snugly over the 5/8" neck. Onto that, I glued 16 evenly-spaced lengths of styrene strip (1/8"x.060", IIRC), every other one marked at alternating 1/16" and 3/16" intervals, and filled the gaps with plumbing epoxy putty. Then I cut 40 little triangles (Ă‚ÂĽ"x3/16") out of 2mm-thick craft foam, and glued them in the marked 3/16" spaces on each alternating strip. Then I sprayed the whole thing with antique gold spray paint, and Rub'n'Buffed it further with their Antique Gold.

[ETA: Some of the spikes are now a little wonky, but I'll take that to being broken off. Half of why I made them out of craft foam. The other half being, if I accidentally whack someone at a con...]

I find it satisfactory until I'm able to ID the original piece.
