What is the consensus for the shaft? Pool que, ski pole, conduit?
The grips, smooth plastic?
Have we found a decent supplier for the worm hob gear?
The grip and pommel... any new headway on those peices?

I found this link, but I don't know enough about machining and such to specify the correct part:

There was another recent build where a member used a plastic worm gear from a garage door opener and cut off part to make it look perfect.
I believe the official ruling is that weapons aren't part of the approval process so they're not necessary. If they are included in the approval pictures though they are "judged" and thus should be accurate (as much as possible). For forcepikes this means that they should be a correct length for the member (head height +/- a few inches...arm length is too short...a foot over your head is too long), it should be metal or metal looking (most member who make their own use pool cues and paint them or ski poles though other things such as metal boat lights, and even fishing poles have been attempted), and the top should be movie specific (ROTJ has teeth-like rasps though for safety reasons this might not be the best idea, while prequel guards have a ribbed appearance, often created by stacking o-rings). There are also 2 grips which are separate and some form of pommel on the bottom.

That was exactly the post I was looking for! Thanks, Jester!
I will strive to make an oldschool prop as a side project, the same way I would love to make an E-11 out of a Sterling, or find some of those old flash things to make lightsaber hilts with.
As for the the short term... I'll find my pike in a cabbage feild.
