Hello,
As I have not been able to find any outer Robe patterns anywhere, I decided to try mocking up my own patterns. Here is what I have so far, made out of muslin. Any helpful advice, critiques are welcome and appreciated. Please let me know what works and what does not etc.

If I can get this all worked out, I'll put together a tutorial with how I made my pattern pieces so that others can benefit.

While the draping in the front is an acceptable option for RoTJ guards, you have a lot of bunching on the sides and the back that will not work for 501st approval. The draping on the front of the RoTJ guard if you choose to go that route cannot produce any bunching or wrinkling anywhere else.

The pattern that is more commonly used is Simplicity 5840. There is a blue robe parrten that is heavily modified to get the result of a royal guard outer cloak (sleeves become side panels, front panel is a single piece instead of 4, etc).

Question: if layed out flat, how wide are your outer robes?

I'll work on taking out some of the bulk. Curently I have four panels, front and back are approx 42 inches wide at the bottom. Then 2 side panels that are triangle shaped approx 40 inches at the bottom up to a point that meets the front and back panels at the shoulder.

My outer cloak is comprised of 5 panels, 2 back, 2 "sleeve" and a front. Total of 10m of fabric for both the outer shell and the inner lining. each panel is basically the width of the fabric (60" if I remember correctly) at the bottom. Granted I am also almost 6'3" tall and have a 52" chest measurement...

Could 3 pleats on each shoulder, and then 3 across the back help the bunching (while also sticking true to some side images)?

My second version. I've shortened the shoulders and changed the side panels to have a rounded top. seems to fit the shoulder better. Opinions would be great.

I am approx 5ft 10inches tall and 190 lbs. For this mock up I've used 4 panels. Front and back panels are 42 inches at the bottome and 2 side panels are 21 inches at the bottom. Any advice on the overlap for the arm opening would be great as well as any other critiques or comments you might have.

That second mock-up looks much better! I'm not an expert in ROTJ though, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Made my inner robes and sash this weekend (except for hemming the robes). I've found a tutorial on making gloves online, so I will start that process soon, then my gloves will exactly match my inner robes and sash (and outer robe lining). Now that I have my velvet for color match, it's also time to start sanding my helmet and prepping it for paint.
