Much ado about rope

A few questions pertaining to the sash in the CRL. What are some of the best ways anyone has found to secure the sash for wearing?
What type of rope is acceptable(diameter, polyethylene, marine, nylon, cotton)
Any bad experiences with a sash, or any words of warning?

The rope for the belt should be the same colour as the fabric, and will need to be "wrapped" around 3 or 5 times (not 4). As for thickness and such, this will all depend on the size of the individual costumer as someone who is 6'8" will not necessarily use the same thing as someone who is 5'2".
