Hello,
As I have not been able to find any outer Robe patterns anywhere, I decided to try mocking up my own patterns. Here is what I have so far, made out of muslin. Any helpful advice, critiques are welcome and appreciated. Please let me know what works and what does not etc.

If I can get this all worked out, I'll put together a tutorial with how I made my pattern pieces so that others can benefit.

While the draping in the front is an acceptable option for RoTJ guards, you have a lot of bunching on the sides and the back that will not work for 501st approval. The draping on the front of the RoTJ guard if you choose to go that route cannot produce any bunching or wrinkling anywhere else.

The pattern that is more commonly used is Simplicity 5840. There is a blue robe parrten that is heavily modified to get the result of a royal guard outer cloak (sleeves become side panels, front panel is a single piece instead of 4, etc).

It looks like to me Madighon is pretty spot on (aside from the wrinkling) ! Am I missing something on this ?

The reason for the nit picking is I am wanting to go the drapped route and I want to make sure I have it correct !

His was one of the best. Sadly when I asked years ago he couldn't do commissions for more as his grandmother (from memory) made them.

Oh, absolutely ! I am trying to pattern my cloak after his !

I do know that he did revise it and trim the cloak after it was suggested.

We are still contemplating the design for my outer. Not to be negative but the opening seems wrong. IMO thr stills and reference material I have collected has the back of the opening slit have an extra piece that goes under the front and the shoulders are joined at seam giving the slit starting at point of shoulder. I have seen a lot like your design where the slit is tacked to make it start at the under arm, but the reference material this is not flat or have a seam here.

6 foot even

Now tbh the mock was a cotton sheet and not the double layered velvet final.
My biggest concern was that the drapes fell correctly.

As you see above, there's not a lot of screen footage that shows where the robe meets.

Thawb test fitting - pre hemming !

I did place the obi-swash a little low so on the next fitting I'll have it placed correctly !









After the seamstress let's me know when the bottom is done I will get better pics as it's a little dark in her house.
