Around $50 would be preferable, but I definitely can't go over $100.

I'd be really niterested in how those Payless would work, and how they would look after the straps and such are removed. Curious to know what your thoughts are on the color, too.
Can't wait to go to a Payless and say "Yo, I need this in a Ladies size 12, and lemme' try 'em on".

Just went to Payless. I definitely recommend getting the wide size, especially if you're a guy. I couldn't get my foot in on the regular 12, but the 12 wide was fine. Since the bottom is flat, inserts may be in order to keep your feet comfy.
I'm still not sure how easy it will be to remove the bottom strap from the boot as I've never done such a thing before. I might try asking a place around here that repairs shoes. There is also a loop of fabric in the back for the strap to slide through. Does anyone know if that would need to be removed as well?
Basically, try it for yourself and see if the boots would be comfortable on your feet. I'm thinking this might be a nice temporary boot until you gain entrance into the 501st and can afford the lovely accurate ones being sold currently.

Those will work. Unless you have really narrow calves it is nearly impossible to get your foot in boots with out some type of assistance.

Alright! Shoes are hard for me to find as it is, so I feel like I've made a huge step in becoming a guard! If you have a Shoe Dept. near you, these were in the women's section and were reduced to $20. They run bigger than other size 12 boots I've tried, but I figure that will allow me to put some cushioned inserts in them for extra comfort.

Okay, newbie question: should the boots match the burgundy of the inner robes, or the red of the outher robes? Or should you just be glad to find either one?

From my understanding and looking at the available images of the Royal Guard boots, the boots should be more red, not burgundy/dark purple, so they should be IMHO closer to the outer robe. The CRL also states for level 2, it should be crimson red.
FYI - Based on images that I saw of the boots taken during a Midrid Exhibition of the ROTS Royal Guard and the one of the promo shot, they don't actually exactly match the outer robe.

Just so that there isn't any confusion here.... there is no level 2 certification for the sovereign protectors. The CRL's are in the process of being updated to reflect the no elite standards format.

You either go all out on guard or not at all
