Newbie looking for some help,

Post by tmo21 »

Hey guys I am looking to start my first set of armor and apply for admission into the 501st. While I'm really having a tough time deciding between a royal guard and trooper I am leaning more toward guard. I've been doing a ton of research the last couple days and have a ton of questions.

Long story short my questions are: What pieces are the best place to start? I'm 6'5 will that hinder my ability to find kits that fit for either set? How are you guys doing?!

At 6'3" myself, I have found that most armour isn't made for taller, and/or bigger guys. I am just finishing off my RC and had to get the tall kit and still needed shims to add extra sizing. The robes are easy enough to accomplish as you can make them any length you need and hem them so they fit you appropriately.

Far and away a Guard will be easier for someone your size. I'm 6'4" and like Stripes, I'm finishing up a set of Clone armor and the shimming I've had to do...well...it's not been easy. That being said, there is a Garrison mate who is in my height neighborhood (though a solid 60 lbs lighter) who pulls off a TK just fine. He suffers with lots of "Are you a little tall for a Stormtrooper?" but he survives.

As a Royal Guard it's completely cool to be imposing. Robes are easy to have made your size and it means if you're lucky enough to have an Emperor around it makes him seem all the more frail which is what you're basically going for.

Agreed, based on your height I would recommend doing a Royal Guard over a TK. It is much easier to get soft parts (e.g. robes) to fit then hard armor.

Thanks for the input guys! Extremely helpful.

In your opinion what's the easiest piece to get started with?

There is no one single easier piece.... the best thing to do is research what version of the guard you are looking to do, then from there, start looking for your fabric and helmet. You'll want the fabric before you paint your helmet (assuming it needs paint) so you can do a colour match.
