Outer Robe Lining and other questions

Post by Geohazard »

The CRL lists the Outer robe lining as needed to be velvet or velveteen. This goes against everything I've been trained to do with liners as a costumer in the past. Linings are supposed to be made of smooth material so that they slip against anything worn under, instead of catching on everything as velvet is wont to do.

Is it absolutely necessary to use velvet for the liner in order to be approved with the 501st as an RotJ RG? Or would I be able to use something like a burgundy satin (which IMHO would look and feel much better)?

I would also like to add the black ribbon of mourning to the hem, but according to the CRL there is no description of a proper ribben width. The only reference I've been able to locate described the ribbon as "a few centimeters", which is vague and frustrating. How much is a few? Has anyone else added the black ribbon to their outer robes, and if so, how wide? Did you use a satin ribbon, or a velveteen one?

Thanks for any help! :trsuit:

I don't have velveteen lining my outer cloak for the very reason you have stipulated (catching on everything and not gliding.... not to mention the heat retention). The biggest issue is making sure that what ever fabric you do use, it doesn't have a shine to it. This will rule out anything that is satin, sateena or silk right off the bat.

So if I understand correctly, its ok to use another fabric as long as it doesn't have a shiny finish?

Awesome! Thanks!

Well, if it was up to me, I'd make the outer shell from red wool suiting and the lining from burgundy satin. But it's not up to me. :aww:

However my seamstress has located a suitable supply of red velvet, so we're on target as far as that is concerned. The thawb will be made from burgundy linen. I was thinking about lining the cloak with the same material.

The outer is definitely Velvet or Velveteen, there is no exceptions to that.

The lining could be made from Gaberdine, broadcloth or something equally as heavy in weight so as to give it the proper draping.

For the inner robe, it can be velvet, velveteen or the same fabric as the lining to the outer cloak.

My wife says velvet, all of it. Or she kills me for what I made her go through.

I say, avoid the heat with an alternate fabric.

And just what did you make her go through?... My GF has endured 3+hours of makeup to do her costume beside me just to get her creepy old face on... :trsuit:

Yeah, I'm going with the Linen. It'll take the dye well, have a matte finish, and most importantly, breathe!
