Squirrel's Don Post Helmet repair and paint
Squirrel's Don Post Helmet repair and paint
Hey all, aquired a Don Post RG Helmet from our XO, and have just completed major repairs
Here's how it looked when I got it:
I taped up all the cracks on the outside with blue painters tape, and super-glued the cracks from the inside. I then allowed the glue to set-up, and peeled the tape off. *If the tape did not stick to an area because of the super-glue, I put a fresh piece on, and re glued that area.*
At which point I began sanding down the ledges formed by the glue, and smoothed everything out.

Then I took it outside and primed it.
I then took it back inside and wet-sanded every surface.
I have installed the visor, using VELCRO! So I can take it out for cleaning. The red tint will be added later.
When I have cash, I will be getting the black paint and the gloss coat (it's a secret!)

Looks like you put allot of work into it, and it looks good. What color red are you going to use? Are you going to paint it yourself or take it to the shop?
Re: Squirrel's Don Post Helmet repair and paint
Negative, red-eye. The helmet will be black. I'm doing a shadow guard. As for the paint, I'll be doing that myself most likely. Unless I suddenly come into more money than my self-control can handle.REDEYE wrote:Looks like you put allot of work into it, and it looks good. What color red are you going to use? Gotcha.
Did you use fiberglass in the repair, I can't tell?
BTW...the finished looks great!
Re: Squirrel's Don Post Helmet repair and paint
Negative again Red-eye. No fiberglass used yet. I was debating on doing that later. I tried a coating of Resin, but the resin was too old and did not adhere properly. It had to be ripped out at the expense of a previous repair attempt. It was so bad, I deleted the pics from my phone. I have the second coat of black on, and might have another small, very small, fix to do for smoothness. Not sure. Next up, the clear coat.
Admins, care to make this a sticky on how to fix a Don Post?

Also, if you looked at the before pics, the side of the visor area was completely FUBAR. I reconstructed this by following the steps I used for the rest of the helmet with one exception: When I was sanding the seams down, I pushed all the "dust" into the void. I then covered the area in superglue on the outside and inside. this gave me a medium to work with for filling that gap. This method only works if you put the dust in the area first. Don't try to mix it, then move it, it doesn't work! Patience is the key in this situation. it will not dry instantly like usual. You must wait for it to cure.

I found the same to be true with the ABS glue I used. It would dry and harden almost to the touch pretty fast but it wasn't solid or sand-able until a few days later. Once again, great job Squirrel!
