Here's a close-up of mine:
For the spiky bit, I have a bit of thin brass tubing (21/32"ID x 1 5/16"L) that fits snugly over the 5/8" neck. Onto that, I glued 16 evenly-spaced lengths of styrene strip (1/8"x.060", IIRC), every other one marked at alternating 1/16" and 3/16" intervals, and filled the gaps with plumbing epoxy putty. Then I cut 40 little triangles (¼"x3/16") out of 2mm-thick craft foam, and glued them in the marked 3/16" spaces on each alternating strip. Then I sprayed the whole thing with antique gold spray paint, and Rub'n'Buffed it further with their Antique Gold.
[ETA: Some of the spikes are now a little wonky, but I'll take that to being broken off. Half of why I made them out of craft foam. The other half being, if I accidentally whack someone at a con...]
I find it satisfactory until I'm able to ID the original piece.
