Saberpike Construction Concepts

I have two pikes one is bladed the other is a non bladed.
I will show mock up for the nonbladed first.

What is the length of your saber pike? I'm making a cad drawing based on a picture in the photobucket album and scaled it with a length of 5'-0", guessing that the guard holding it was 6'-0" tall.

Well that is also an optical illusion on the saber pike length. It held at an angle in that picture. Mine is personally at 5'10, which is slightly shorter than the original bladed one that I had last year. I've been just using my stunt one as i call it with out the blade for trooping for the fact of low clearance ceilings. Nothing worse than setting off water sprinklers prematurely. I've got it set up with some basic greeblies that give it the feel of how it looks. Also as far as the CAD drawing there is a member of the Cloud City Garrison who actually has already done a CAD drawing of it. I'll see if i can't track it down for ya.

True but the other illusion is that the helmet sits a little higher on the head than the 6'-0" person wearing it (doesn't it?). I figured 5' was long enough to look good while still being easy to carry (and twirl if you so desired). If you can track that cad drawing down that would be cool, I'd like to see it for comparison since this is the first time I've done something like this.

I've been thinking of a way to build this staff without the extreme costs of having it machined from aluminum and came up with this:

It's nylon tubing and it comes in a wide range of ID vs. OD dimensions. I was thinking of taking a piece and milling it down on a lathe. Each piece comes in 26" lengths, enough for the 2 grip areas (and possibly a 3rd grip for another staff) and the grip under the emitter. The price isn't too bad when you break it down but I'll look around to see if there is another option.

I too have gone with the 5foot mark based on shoulder position etc and what seems right when standing beside it.

I went with a 1 3/8 curtain rod from home depot - already black - great thickness for the hand - and decent weight - then I skinned down my fx saber and it will slide in perfectly - I just need to add some quick connects and I can leave it all stock as I have the sound/battery pack at the bottom.

I need to get the greeblies part done - but haven't had any time in the last few days.

Good news! I heard back from US Plastics and they said that the nylon tubing I was looking at can be milled down to a different shape. I'm a little short on funds right now but I will start pricing out the pieces and try to make an estimate on how much it will cost to make just the grips and emitter (and use kivas' curtain rod) vs. adding enough in for the straight sections too. Once I've got the cash I'll order some and start working on it.
