flopcardboard's Pike Build - WIP

Post by flopcardboard »

Well, I'm officially in to it now, so I figured I'd make a Build Thread detailing my steps.

All of the ideas within can be found in other threads here on the forums however, so shout outs to Sir Ken and silverBoyd for their threads which inspired mine.

Material List - Currently Incomplete
  • Pool Cue (Walmart - $8)
  • Kitchen Faucet Handles (Walmart - $7/pair)
  • Standard Red Hard Rubber Faucet Washer (Aubuchon Hardware - $.59)
  • Flex Funnel (Advanced Automotive - $1.50)
  • O-Rings (Lowe's - $3/pack of ten)
  • 1.5" Diameter Heat Shrink (Lowe's Online - $32/48" length)
  • 1.5" Fender Washers (Lowe's - $7/pack of 25)
  • 1.5" Steel Spacer (Lowe's - $2)
  • Wood Screw
  • Sand Paper
  • All Purpose Heavy Duty Glue
Step Zero: Wooden Pool Cue; 48" single piece cue.

Step One:
Add Universal Fit Kitchen Handles.

Step Two:
Assemble using appropriate length wood screw. Added a faucet washer to prevent leakage of glue that will be added in Step Three.

Step Three:
Fill empty space in Kitchen handle with Elmer's Glue-All MAX. I filled it right up to the brim, as it's supposed to be "low foaming."

Step Four: Well.... "Low Foaming" is still a fair amount of foaming, but I caught it, and managed to clean most of it off before the glue had time to fully cure. Sorry, no picture as I was frantically trying to prevent catastrophic failure a mere hour into the project.

Step Five:
After 24 hours of cure time, sanded the pommel and cue shaft to prep for a coat of primer down the line.

Step Six:
Add Flex Funnel to the party.

Step Seven:
Cut end of funnel to fit pool cue at the right level for the right look. Note: Do not glue the flex funnel in yet.
http://imgur.com/5MdxEXk

Step Eight:
Trim the excess funnel. For me, 7 "rasps" felt right. Still not glued in yet!

And that was all I could get done until I went shopping for the rest of the materials.

I'll post an update as I move on to the next phase of the build: defining the hand grips.

EDIT: Added Material List at the top of the OP.

Sorry for the lack of updates!

I was looking around for some 1.5" diameter Heat Shrink, but no place had any locally for me. The Internet has provided however, and I will be putting in some more work starting tomorrow and (fingers crossed) finishing up this weekend.

Stay tuned!

I'd verify the stacking ring/coil is acceptable, as in my WiP I was told that it needs to be serrated rasp for OT. http://forcepike.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=18044#p18044

That part aside, looks pretty good so far!

Agreed...RotJ is a rasp, Ep 2 and 3 are the setup you've got going.

I'm planning to use a dremel "raspify" it once I affix it and fill it with an epoxy.

But yes, as is, the coil is definitely prequel Guard.

And I'm back! Did the next phase of building over the past two days.

Step Nine: I wasn't happy with some of the bubbles and gaps left by the heavy duty glue. Enter Milliput!
http://imgur.com/QmqAexI

Step Ten: Knead the two-part milliput together, and apply liberally to the joint of shaft and pommel.
http://imgur.com/AFieiXr

Step Eleven: Sculpt the milliput into the rough shape I want; a rounded end.
http://imgur.com/9Yoi5mb

Step Twelve: Allow the milliput to harden, 2-3 hours usually, but I left it overnight just to be safe. The using sandpaper, I refined the shape i had sculpted in.

Step Thirteen: Time to start working on the grips. These are the O-Rings that would form the ribbing.
http://imgur.com/Rp9R5qL

Step Fourteen: I spaced the O-Rings out every 1" along the shaft of the cue; giving an overall grip length of about 6 inches.
http://imgur.com/XzRSzBg

Step Fifteen: Cut a 8" length of 1.5" Diameter Heat Shrink, cover the o-rings, and then apply heat. The reason the heat shrink was cut to 8" when my grip will be 6" is because the shrink has about a 3:1 shrink ratio. This is what we get:

Step Sixteen: Once cool enough to touch, but before the interior adhesive has had time to completely cool, trim the excess heat shrink so that it overlaps the last o-ring by half an inch.

Step Seventeen: Allow about 1.5-2" of space, then repeat steps 14-16 for a second
, upper grip.

That's all I have today! This weekend we move on to the rasp and emitter. Then it should just be primer and paint and sealing!
