Extremely close to being finished with the helmet. I finally got the slight repairs and priming finished and have begun the actual red painting process. Going to add 3 coats of the red paint and then finish it off with a clear coat.

more helmet progress....

Here are some pictures I forgot to post of the helmet after I fixed the lines on the side and the 3 coats of primer were applied.

(NOTE: I recommend using a white primer rather than grey because white primer has less of a chance to effect the color of red paint when it is applied. Grey paint could possibly darken your red paint)

And here are some updated photos of the third coat of red paint after being applied. Going to sand with a 2000 grit sandpaper next to get rid of some slight "orange peel" in the paint and then it should be almost ready for clear coat. Can't wait to see the glossy finish on this bad boy.

The shades of the velvet swatch and the color of the helmet vary in the photos due to the flash / garage lighting / etc...

That is very very close in colour to the helmet.

2 cans of red + a few coats of clear. The humidity here in the summertime is ridiculous and is making it have an "orange peel". Taking it to a paint booth this weekend to redo the clear coat. It's been sanded a dozen time too with 2000 grit.

well...after 1 month of fighting with the humid weather and having to take a slow approach to painting, I can now say that my helmet is officially complete. Now to re-install my visor.

Buffed and sanded to 3000 grit...that's not a type-o either...I used 3000 grit

It's funny how different lighting can sometimes make the helmet look orange

I'm extremely happy with it.

I picked up my helmet from my friend last night who painted it and it looks even cooler in person. I will be trying it on with my robes tonight so I can make sure everything is ready to take my approval pictures.

Also, for anyone looking to do a Guard and are considering using Bondo to help fill in the seam on the side....let me give you a tip. Try this stuff. It can be found in automotive stores. It fills in gaps / pinholes / etc., so much better than Bondo and is flexible. It's basically a self-leveling / flowable putty that eliminates unwanted surface texture, which saves sanding time. I'll never use Bondo again. This stuff is awesome. It's more expensive than Bondo but it's worth it because of how nice it is

Finally took my approval pictures. Sent them into my Garrison Member Liaison and I was approved. This is my 3rd approved 501st costume with a 4th rig currently in production...an AT-AT Driver.

Seeing this Guard finished is so satisfying. I began the road to becoming a Guard back in September 2015.

Let me know what you all think?
